ABBA/Björn & Benny/Agnetha Fältskog/Frida

ABBA was a Swedish pop music group formed in Stockholm in 1972, consisting of Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad (the brunette and sometimes red-haired girl), Björn Ulvaeus (the blond guy), Benny Andersson (the one with the beard) and Agnetha Fältskog (the blonde girl). Throughout the band's existence, Fältskog and Ulvaeus were a married couple, as were Lyngstad and Andersson - although both couples later divorced. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, and they topped the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1983. ABBA gained international popularity employing catchy song hooks, simple lyrics, sound effects (reverb, phasing) and a Wall of Sound achieved by overdubbing the female singers' voices in multiple harmonies. As their popularity grew, they were sought after to tour Europe, Australia, and North America, drawing crowds of ardent fans, notably in Australia. Touring became a contentious issue, being particularly cumbersome for Fältskog, but they continued to release studio albums to widespread commercial success. At the height of their popularity, however, both relationships began suffering strain that led ultimately to the collapse of first the Ulvaeus-Fältskog marriage (in 1979) and then of the Andersson-Lyngstad marriage in 1981. In the late 1970s and early 1980s these relationship changes began manifesting in the group's music, as they produced more thoughtful, introspective lyrics with different compositions. ABBA remains a fixture of radio play lists and is one of the world's best-selling bands, having sold over 375 million records worldwide, making them the fourth best-selling popular music artists in the history of recorded music. They still sell two to three million records a year. ABBA was also the first pop group from a non English-speaking country to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, South Africa/Rhodesia, Australia and New Zealand. Their popularity in Latin America was also undeniable, as well as reaching the top of the charts in different countries like Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru among others, the band also released a compilation of their hit songs translated into Spanish. "Gracias por la musica" was released in 1980 to be followed by "ABBA ORO" in 1999. After ABBA split, Andersson and Ulvaeus achieved success writing music for the stage while Lyngstad and Fältskog pursued individual solo careers with varying success. ABBA's music remained steadily popular until several films, notably Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, revived interest in the group, spawning several tribute bands. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into the successful musical Mamma Mia! that toured worldwide and had a movie version released in 2008, becoming the highest grossing film in the UK at the time. The group was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 15 March 2010. Only Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were present to accept ABBA's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group was inducted into the museum by Bee Gees members Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb.

Ring Ring (1973)

Ring Ring is ABBA's first studio album, though under the name Björn Benny & Agnetha Frida. It was released on March 26, 1973 in Scandinavia and a limited number of other territories, including West Germany, Australia, South Africa and Mexico. The album was re-released in Australasia in 1975, but was not issued in the United Kingdom until 1992, and the United States until three years after. The album also features a song co-written by Agnetha Fältskog. Super Trouper (1980)

Super Trouper is ABBA's seventh studio album, released on November 3, 1980. Led by the international hit "The Winner Takes It All", Super Trouper was the group's sixth chart-topping album in the UK. It was also the best-selling album in Britain for 1980. Super Trouper was first released on CD in 1983 by Polydor, again in the 1980's by Atlantic Records, and in the 1990s by Polydor in the USA. The album has been reissued in digitally remastered form three times; first in 1997, then in 2001 and again in 2005 as part of the The Complete Studio Recordings box set. Probably due to the disco backlash of the time, the album saw ABBA returning to a more straight-forward pop sound, as opposed to the preceding (and noticeably more dance-orientated) Voulez-Vous album. The singles released from this album were: The Winner Takes It All (#2 Sweden, #1 U.K., #8 U.S.), Super Trouper (#11 Sweden, #1 U.K., #45 U.S.), Happy New Year, On and On and On (#9 Australia, #90 U.S.), Andante Andante, and Lay All Your Love on Me (#7 U.K.).

The Visitors (1981)

The Visitors is ABBA's eighth and last studio album, released on November 30, 1981. With The Visitors, ABBA took several steps away from the "lighter" pop music they had recorded previously and the album is often regarded as a more complex and mature effort. The opening track, "The Visitors", with its ominous synthesizer sounds and the distinctive lead vocal by Frida, announced a change in musical style. The Visitors album was one of the first records to be recorded and mixed digitally, and was the first in history to be manufactured on the new CD format in 1982. The Visitors has been reissued in digitally remastered form three times - first in 1997, then in 2001 and again in 2005 as part of The Complete Studio Recordings box set. The singles released from this album were: One of Us (#13 Sweden, #107 U.S., #3 U.K.), When All Is Said and Done (#81 Australia, #27 U.S.), Head over Heels (#4 Netherlands, #2 Belgium, #32 U.K.), and The Visitors (Crackin' Up) (#63 U.S.).

ABBA Live! (1986)

ABBA Live is an album of live recordings by Swedish pop group ABBA, released by Polar Music in 1986. When this LP/CD was released, the band's popularity was at an all-time low and none of the members themselves were involved in the production of the album. ABBA Live contains recordings from 1977, 1979 and 1981 - much to the dismay of both music critics and ABBA fans it also had 80's synth drums overdubbed on most tracks, taking away the true live feeling of the performances. Neither did it feature any of the tracks that the band had performed live on their tours but never included on any of their studio albums, such as "I Am An A", "Get On The Carousel", "I'm Still Alive", or the original live versions of the songs from the 1977 mini-musical The Girl With The Golden Hair; "Thank You For The Music", "I Wonder (Departure)" and "I'm A Marionette", all of which had slightly different lyrics and/or musical arrangements to the subsequent studio recordings included on ABBA - The Album. Several tracks had also been heavily edited, in the case of the 1979 live recording of "Does Your Mother Know" by as much as five minutes since it originally was performed on that tour as a medley with "Hole In Your Soul". ABBA Live was the first ABBA album to be simultaneously released on LP and CD, the CD having three "extra tracks". The album did not perform very well, internationally or domestically, peaking at #49 in Sweden and only staying in the charts for two weeks. Nevertheless, it still remains the only official live album by the group. It was remastered and rereleased by Polydor/Polar in 1997, but is currently out of print. *NOTE: We decided to include as a bonus track a live version of I Wonder from ABBA's 1977 tour as a personal choice for your listening pleasure, but originally this track doesn't come in this album.

Tracklist:

1-) Dancing Queen.
2-) Take a Chance on Me.
3-) I Have a Dream.
4-) Does Your Mother Know?
5-) Chiquitita.

Björn & Benny

Björn & Benny was the name of the Swedish folk rock duo, comprised by ABBA songwriters and musicians, Björn Kristian Ulvaeus and Göran Benny Bror Andersson. Prior to meeting each other, Björn formed part of the Swedish folk group The Hootenanny Singers and Benny formed part of the Swedish version of The Beatles, The Hep Stars. In 1966, they met each other and bonded and decided to collaborate writing songs together. Björn & Benny was the first solid proof that their songwriting collaboration was really serious and was going strong and considering that this was all pre-ABBA. After ABBA already with new wives and restructured lives, Björn and Benny collaborated together once again by writing the music score of the musical Chess in 1984. It was a major hit around the world and the most famous track One Night in Bangkok, performed by British actor and singer Murray Head, was in fact written by Ulvaeus and Andersson themselves. They also collaborated with the Mamma Mia! stage musical first premiered in 1999 and they also contributed to the 2008 movie, starring Meryl Streep. Up to this day, both men remain best friends.

Agnetha Fältskog

Agneta Åse Fältskog (Swedish pronunciation: [aŋˈneːta ˈfɛltskuːɡ]) was born on 5 April 1950 in Jönköping, Sweden. She became a household name in Sweden after the release of her debut album Agnetha Fältskog in 1968, and reached international stardom as a member of pop group ABBA, which sold nearly 370 million records worldwide, making them the second best–selling band in history and the fourth best–selling pop artists in history. After ABBA, she continued recording in English as a solo artist with varying success. Her most recent musical effort came in the shape of My Colouring Book, released in 2004.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agnetha Fältskog (1968)

Agnetha Fältskog was the debut album by Swedish pop singer and ABBA member Agnetha Fältskog. The eponymous album was released on the Cupol label in Sweden in early 1968.
Agnetha had been singing with the local Swedish "dansband" Bengt Engharts in Jönköping for quite a while when the band in the Autumn of 1967 decided to send a tape of demos to the record-company Cupol. Singer, producer and A & R man Little Gerhard (né Karl-Gerhard Lundqvist) listened to the tape and happened to notice that besides the band's demos there was also a young girl singing - on the flipside of the tape, backwards. He played it the other way round and heard "Jag var så kär" for the first time. Lundqvist was so impressed with the song and Fältskog's voice that he phoned her up at the car firm where she was working at the time and offered her a recording contract - only as a solo singer, without the band.
"Jag Var Så Kär" - in fact the B-side of debut single "Följ Med Mig" - became Fältskog's first entry and also number one on the all-important radio chart Svensktoppen in January 1968. After the following success of the tracks "Utan dej, mitt liv går vidare", "Allting har förändrat sig", "Den jag väntat på" and "Snövit och de sju dvärgarna", most of them composed by Fältskog herself, Cupol released her debut album in the Spring of 1968, containing all tracks previously issued on these singles as well as a few new recordings. She wrote "Försonade" and submitted it to melodifestivalen (Swedish eurovision heat) for singer Gunnar Wiklund, but it was rejected. The song could also recently be heard in the movie "Låt den rätte komma in" (Let the Right One In) in a scene where the young girl plays it on a tape recorder for her boyfriend. The album has since been re-issued both on CD and iTunes.

Tracklist:

Agnetha Fältskog Vol. 2. (1969)

Agnetha Fältskog Vol. 2 is Agnetha Fältskog's second studio album, released in 1969. The album featured two compositions by Fältskog herself. "Zigenarvän" became the biggest hit, but its overly romantic lyrics about gypsies also became the source of controversy. Other tracks entering the Svensktoppen chart were "Framför Svenska Sommaren", "En Gång Fanns Bara Vi Två" and "Hjärtats Kronprins". A large part of the songs on this album were written by Agnetha's fiancé at the time, West German record producer Dieter Zimmermann who tried to launch her career in German-speaking countries like West Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Fältskog released a total of eight singles in the German language between the years 1969 and 1972, but her success was fairly limited. Tracks originally recorded in German on this album include "Señor Gonzales" and "Som En Vind Kom Du Till Mej" (Wie Der Wind), also "Det Handlar Om Kärlek" (concerto d'amore). The album has been re-issued both on CD and iTunes.

Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus (1975)

Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus (Eleven Women in One House) is Agnetha Fältskog's fifth studio album and last one in Swedish, released on December 1, 1975. The album was recorded in the same period as her bandmate Anni-Frid Lyngstad made her Swedish number one album Frida ensam - and both were recorded between sessions and a very busy promotion schedule for ABBA albums Waterloo and ABBA. Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus was originally slated for release in 1973 but following Agnetha's pregnancy that year and later the unexpected success with ABBA it was postponed and not released until late 1975.it took four years since her last LP ,she recorded meanwhile in 1972 a live album of Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar (Swedish version 1972) and released a studio version single from it. Fältskog composed all songs herself with lyrics by Swedish writer, journalist and lyricist Bosse Carlgren. The only exception was the Swedish version of the ABBA song "S.O.S." which was written by Benny Andersson, Stig Anderson and Fältskog's husband at the time, Björn Ulvaeus. Fältskog's record company Cupol insisted on including a Swedish version of an ABBA song to increase album sales. Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus was first released on CD in 2004 as part of the "Agnetha Fältskog De Första Åren" 6 CD boxed set. It also appeared on the Agnetha Faltskog edition of Original Album Classics, part of a larger series of identically named box sets issued by Sony Music during the late 2000s. This album describes eleven women, all leading very different lives, but all living in the same house.

Frida (1971)

Frida is Frida's first and self-titled album, released in 1971. It consists of Frida's very personal and "jazzy" cover versions of English or American songs. By the time of the album's release Lyngstad had been signed to EMI/Columbia for four years. Frida, recorded in late 1970/early 1971, produced by her then fiancé Benny Andersson and Bengt Palmers (Blue Swede, Harpo), was to be her first full-length studio album for EMI. The album received unanimously generous praise from the critics, who especially noted the precision and versatility of Frida as a vocalist. For example, Swedens biggest morning paper "Dagens Nyheter" (Daily News) wrote: "Proffessional, sure and certain LP-debut...low key but self-sure personality with sprinkles of both temperament, humor and tenderness. And she sings in this way that you understand she´s got something between her ears - she sings with others words in a very intelligent way". The album was also re-released the following year as she had her first Svensktoppen number one, "Min Egen Stad", adding this song as track 1 side B. This version of the album was later given a third release, then as a compilation under the name EMI:s Stjärnserie Vol. 7 (EMI Star Series). This album is included in the EMI compilation Frida 1967-1972. A cover version of The Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road" from the Frida sessions remains unreleased.

Shine (1984)

Shine is Frida's fourth studio album and her second and last in English. It was released on September 11, 1984. Shine is included in The Frida Boxset. The promotion videos and clips from this album are included in the 3 1/2 hour documentary Frida the dvd. Shine was the follow up to Frida's 1982 album Something's Going On. Recording began on February 1, 1984, at the Studios de la Grand Armée, Paris, France. Producer was the only 25 years old Steve Lillywhite, at this early age, already known for his work with Peter Gabriel, Rolling Stones and U2 amongst others. The lead single from the album was the titletrack, "Shine". In some countries "Twist In The Dark" and "Heart Of The Country" were released as singles. Shine reached the Top 10 on the album charts in Sweden, Norway and Belgium, and the Top 20 in the Netherlands. The Shine album is considered to be "ahead of it's time". At the time of recording both Something's Going On and Shine, Lyngstad wanted to distance herself from the "typical ABBA pop-sound" and try new directions. Lillywhite managed to give Lyngstad an even more modern and complex soundscape than Phil Collins had done on her previous album. In Frida the dvd, when speaking about Shine, Lyngstad herself says "that maybe this album became a bit too modern for its time". Shine is full of complex arrangements and odd sounds. A few years later, though, groups like Duran Duran and others where releasing records with this "typical" sound of the eighties, that Shine had already in 1984. Lillywhite and his musicians managed to create a good and relaxed atmosphere in the studio and this can be heard in Fridas voice and vocals. Her voice sounds very natural and is in good shape throughout all the songs and vocally Shine is one of her best albums. Shine features songwriting contributions from musicians such as the late Kirsty MacColl, Simon Climie - of Climie Fisher fame, and Pete Glenister - Alison Moyet's co-writer and producer. The Shine album is also unic because it saw the debut of Lyngstad as a songwriter in both "Don't Do It" and "That's Tough". (Frida also wrote "I Don't Wanna Be Alone," during this period). The track "Slowly" was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA. This song is also the last song written by the ABBA-composers to be recorded by either of ABBA's female vocalists to date. As a trivia fact, Slowly was later covered by Mexican pop band Timbiriche in the shape of Muriendo Lento. Shine has never been officially released in the United States, but was issued in Canada by WEA. Phil Collins was to produce again, but as Genesis formed part of his other commitments, producer Steve Lillywhite took over his role. The singles released from this album were: Shine (#6 Sweden, #82 U.K.), Twist in the Dark, Heart of the Country, and Come to Me (I Am Woman).

Djupa Andetag (1996)

Djupa Andetag (Deep Breath) is Frida's fifth and last studio album. It was released in 1996. It was Recorded in the Polar Music Studio, Stockholm. Lyrics are in Swedish. The album went to #1 in Sweden. Lead single from the album was "Även En Blomma" ("Even A Flower"). "Djupa Andetag" is included in the Frida Box Set. The promotion videos and clips from this album can be seen in the 3 1/2 hour documentary Frida the dvd. Some of the songs has been re-mixed and are presented in Frida - The Mixes. After a few years in the early '90s, as chairperson for the Swedish organisation "Det Naturliga Steget-Artister För Miljön" (The Natural Step-Artists For The Environment), Frida decided to record again. This is a mature album with lyrics dealing with both "inner personal environment" as well as the environment and the nature surrounding us. At the time of recording, Frida did not want the attention an international release would bring and she also felt for singing in her mother tongue again, so the album was recorded in Swedish and released in Scandinavia only. Nowadays, however, the album is to be found everywhere. A one hour documentary of the making and recording of this album + the videoclips, can be seen in Frida the dvd, including interviews with Frida and producer Anders Glenmark. The singles released from this album were: Även En Blomma (#11 Sweden), Ögonen (#24 Sweden), and Alla Mina Bästa Är (#54 Sweden).

Kylie Minogue

Kylie Ann Minogue, OBE was born in Melbourne, Australia on May 28, 1968. After beginning her career as a child actress on Australian television, she achieved recognition through her role in the television soap opera Neighbours, before commencing her career as a recording artist in 1987. Her first single, "Locomotion", spent seven weeks at number one on the Australian singles chart and became the highest selling single of the decade. This led to a contract with songwriters and producers Stock, Aitken & Waterman. Her debut album, Kylie (1988), and the single "I Should Be So Lucky", each reached number one in the United Kingdom, and over the next two years, her first 13 singles reached the British top ten. Her debut film, The Delinquents (1989) was a box-office hit in Australia and the UK despite negative reviews.

Initially presented as a "girl next door", Minogue attempted to convey a more mature style in her music and public image. Her singles were well received, but after four albums her record sales were declining, and she left Stock, Aitken & Waterman in 1992 to establish herself as an independent performer. Her next single, "Confide in Me", reached number one in Australia and was a hit in several European countries in 1994, and a duet with Nick Cave, "Where the Wild Roses Grow", brought Minogue a greater degree of artistic credibility. Drawing inspiration from a range of musical styles and artists, Minogue took creative control over the songwriting for her next album, Impossible Princess (1997). It failed to attract strong reviews or sales in the UK, but was successful in Australia.

Minogue returned to prominence in 2000 with the single "Spinning Around" and the dance-oriented album Light Years, and she performed during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Her music videos showed a more sexually provocative and flirtatious personality and several hit singles followed. "Can't Get You Out of My Head" reached number one in more than 40 countries, and the album Fever (2001) was a hit throughout the world, including the United States, a market in which Minogue had previously received little recognition. Minogue embarked on a concert tour but cancelled it when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. After surgery and chemotherapy treatment, she resumed her career in 2006 with Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour. Her tenth studio album X was released in 2007 and was followed by the KylieX2008 tour. In 2009, she embarked upon her For You, for Me Tour, her first concert tour of the US and Canada.

Although she was dismissed by some critics, especially during the early years of her career, she has achieved worldwide record sales of more than 68 million, and has received notable music awards, including multiple ARIA and Brit Awards and a Grammy Award. She has mounted several successful concert tours and received a Mo Award for "Australian Entertainer of the Year" for her live performances. She was awarded an OBE "for services to music", and an Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2008.
